Donald Trump makes frequent statements about Canada. It also mocks Canada’s inclusion in the United States. In this matter, Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the Left New Democratic Party and MP of Canada, has given a stern warning to the future President of America. He said Trump would be met with a resounding response if he followed through on threats to impose punitive taxes on Canada and a merger between the two countries.
A clear message to Donald Trump
Significantly, the Canadian MP said in a video shared on social media, “I have a message for Donald Trump. Our country is not for sale, not today and never. I’ve traveled all over the country and I can tell you that Canadians need their country. We are ready to fight with all our might to save it.
Importantly, Jagmeet Singh, a former ally of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party, said Canada would not back down from threats and spoke of retaliatory action. He warned America that if Donald Trump thinks he can fight us, they will pay the price.
What did Trump say?
Importantly, Donald Trump will be sworn in next week. Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada. He suggested, however, that he might reconsider if Ottawa improves security on the Canada-US border. Donald Trump has also argued that Canada’s merger with the US could lower tariffs and taxes on both countries. However, the top officials of Canada denied this.
What did Trudeau say?
Notably, Justin Trudeau rejected the US idea just last week. He called Trump’s comments about Canada becoming the 51st US state a “distraction” from the economic damage American consumers are suffering from higher tariffs.
Amid US-Canada tension, MP Jagmeet Singh made it clear that if Donald Trump imposes tariffs on us, we should also impose tariffs in return. During Trump’s previous tenure, Ottawa imposed tariffs on US products such as bourbon, Harley Davidson motorcycles and playing cards in response to tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
