Relations between India and Bangladesh seem to be steadily deteriorating. After the ouster of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the relationship between the two countries has been strained. The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has tightened security to prevent Bangladeshi infiltrators. The BSF has been keeping a close watch on the border area, which has upset Bangladesh’s Mohammad Yunus government.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry on Sunday summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express concern over India’s activities on the border. On Monday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has also summoned the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Nurul Islam, present in New Delhi. India has summoned a top Bangladeshi diplomat in New Delhi over lack of cooperation from the interim government of Bangladesh on the issue of fencing the Indo-Bangladesh border.
India has started fencing the border to prevent Bangladeshi infiltrators from entering the border. This has shocked Bangladesh. The Indian High Commissioner’s meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin in Dhaka lasted for about 45 minutes on these issues. No official statement has been issued by Bangladesh’s interim government on the debate.
